Take the Full Course on This Piece!
Take the Full Course on This Piece!La Paloma ("The Dove") is an infectious tune that has stood the test of time, and was responsible for starting a latin movement (literally) in the Western world. This piece is a habanera, written after the Spanish composer, Sebastian Yradier returned from a trip to Cuba in 1860. It was instantly popular, and caused such a stir that other composers got into the act (most notably Bizet, with his opera Carmen, which commandeered several of Yradier's lines, note for note!). Soon thereafter, habaneras were the big thing throughout the Americas and Europe. This is one of over a thousand arrangements of this song (!). It's one of the most loved and recorded songs in the history of music. And with good reason.

Hi, I’m Allen Mathews.
I started as a folk guitarist, then fell in love with classical guitar in my 20’s. Despite a lot of practice and schooling, I still couldn’t get my music to flow well. I struggled with excess tension. My music sounded forced. And my hands and body were often sore. I got frustrated, and couldn’t see the way forward. Then, over the next decade, I studied with two stellar teachers – one focused on the technical, and one on the musical (he was a concert pianist). In time, I came to discover a new set of formulas and movements. These brought new life and vitality to my practice. Now I help guitarists find more comfort and flow in their music, so they play more beautifully. Click here for a sample formula.
