Learn to play the classic Bourrée in E minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. This piece is from the Lute Suite #1, and is often played as a solo (without the other pieces in the suite). The Bourrée is mostly played in the lower and open positions of the guitar neck. However, there are some stretches that may prove challenging. The rhythm is a repeating pattern throughout, which gives it a dance-like quality. The Bourrée is composed of a melody line and a bass line, and keeping both musical lines smooth and connected offers fun opportunities for experimentation and active listening. For an extra challenge, should you choose, you'll find a bonus lesson on making the bass line short and separated (staccato). This is optional, and it sounds great both with or without this technique.

Allen Mathews

Hi, I’m Allen Mathews.

I started as a folk guitarist, then fell in love with classical guitar in my 20’s. Despite a lot of practice and schooling, I still couldn’t get my music to flow well. I struggled with excess tension. My music sounded forced. And my hands and body were often sore. I got frustrated, and couldn’t see the way forward. Then, over the next decade, I studied with two stellar teachers – one focused on the technical, and one on the musical (he was a concert pianist). In time, I came to discover a new set of formulas and movements. These brought new life and vitality to my practice. Now I help guitarists find more comfort and flow in their music, so they play more beautifully. Click here for a sample formula.
