Take the Full Course on This Piece!Back in the late 1500's, when this Branle Englese was written, lute was still the prevailing instrument of the day. And while there were refined pieces for strings and voice, lute music of the time, or at least the settings of popular dances, was primarily rustic. To paint the scene, think thatched roofs and dirt floors, infrequent baths, Shakespeare, Elizabeth, absolute male domination, drastic rises in literacy, plates of wood and cups of lead, and the great art we now visit in museums. In other words, we're in the Late Renaissance.

Hi, I’m Allen Mathews.
I started as a folk guitarist, then fell in love with classical guitar in my 20’s. Despite a lot of practice and schooling, I still couldn’t get my music to flow well. I struggled with excess tension. My music sounded forced. And my hands and body were often sore. I got frustrated, and couldn’t see the way forward. Then, over the next decade, I studied with two stellar teachers – one focused on the technical, and one on the musical (he was a concert pianist). In time, I came to discover a new set of formulas and movements. These brought new life and vitality to my practice. Now I help guitarists find more comfort and flow in their music, so they play more beautifully. Click here for a sample formula.
