Emmanuel Adriaenssen: Branle Englese

Back in the late 1500's, when this Branle Englese was written, lute was still the prevailing instrument of the day. And while there were refined pieces for strings and voice, lute music of the time, or at least the settings of popular dances, was primarily rustic. To paint the scene, think thatched roofs and dirt floors, infrequent baths, Shakespeare, Elizabeth, absolute male domination, drastic rises in literacy, plates of wood and cups of lead, and the great art we now visit in museums. In other words, we're in the Late Renaissance.

Course Level: BEGINNER

This course is at the BEGINNER level. This means that the notes will all be in the open position (so no moving up and down the neck). The rhythms are simple (mostly quarter and 8th notes) and well-explained. And any chords used are common ones. TABs are included for an alternative to music notation. For more advanced players, pieces in this level can be used as a study to improve phrasing and memorization techniques.

After more than a year as a member, I remain impressed with the Woodshed, song courses, Tuesday quotes, weekly lessons, and the CGS community. Without my membership, I think my enthusiasm for learning classical guitar would have faded long ago. Instead, I am enjoying the process as I make steady progress in my playing.

Life is good, still enjoying [The Woodshed Program], the progress is life altering, I love it. The physical challenges of my situation have rained havoc for over half my life. In spite of those little pests this 40$ Yamaha classical who needed a new home and your course has given me the "part the clouds for the sun to shine through" outlook. You see, even when I am unable to play I know she patiently waits for my return as I do. A giant void in my journey was filled with light.
